Odense Renovation and the Cirkel platform support increased recycling of materials, and the municipality has a solid foundation for promoting a sustainable transition.

However, there is still room to further optimize resource management, and it is necessary to leverage technology and cross-sector collaboration to ensure a sustainable future.

Needs and challenges

There are several areas where Odense can improve sustainability in everyday life:

  • Although waste sorting has improved, there are still opportunities to increase recycling and reduce the volume of waste.
  • Many companies lack incentives and resources to switch to more sustainable and circular business models.
  • There is a need to optimize energy consumption in both the public and private sectors to reduce CO2 emissions.
  • The potential to use technology and data to streamline waste management, energy utilization, and transport is significant, but systematic implementation is lacking.

Summary

Liberal Alliance wants to make Odense a frontrunner in sustainability and the circular economy. This requires a combination of public-private partnerships, technological solutions, and increased collaboration between educational institutions, the business community, and the municipality. We want to support innovation, drive growth, and create more jobs, while simultaneously ensuring a green transition. Sustainability and growth are not opposites, but two sides of the same coin.

Political Proposals for Sustainable Transition

  1. Robot-driven waste management and resource utilization: Politicians force you to sort waste yourself—even though machines can do it better. We should expand waste sorting and recycling by opening more recycling stations and including a broader range of waste fractions. By leveraging technology such as robotics, we can sort waste far more efficiently. Furthermore, the municipality should engage private eco-entrepreneurs to foster a thriving circular economy across the local business sector.
  2. Smart City Solutions: Data-driven solutions in waste management using sensors to optimize collection routes and resource consumption. Develop a comprehensive Smart City strategy that leverages infrastructure data to reduce energy use and optimize traffic flow, waste handling, and building energy performance.
  3. Collaboration with Educational Institutions: Strengthen the partnership between Odense’s educational institutions and local businesses by engaging students in green innovation and sustainability projects. This will drive innovation while equipping students with hands-on experience in building sustainable solutions.
  4. Fostering green partnerships: Prioritize public-private partnerships (PPPs) to develop sustainable solutions across waste management, energy, and transportation.
  5. Green transport and mobility: Expand Odense’s EV charging infrastructure and support the rollout of green mobility solutions, such as e-bikes and shared mobility services. The municipality should also aim to integrate sustainable transport options into the public transit network.
