Less light rail – more business-friendliness

Status

In 2023, Odense Municipality adopted a green mobility plan and has ambitions to expand the light rail with a phase 2.

Although the plan can improve the city's appearance and promote green transport, economic calculations show that the light rail is associated with major financial challenges and congestion in the city.

The light rail does not sufficiently reduce car traffic and instead creates increased congestion.

At the same time, Odense's business community has expressed concern over both infrastructure and public transport, and the city has dropped significantly in DI's business-friendliness ranking, particularly in the transport category.

Needs and challenges

Odense needs a mobility solution that can:

  • Reduce CO₂ emissions without creating high costs or a decline in welfare for citizens. We want to ensure that climate policy is aligned with both Danish and EU climate policy. Going it alone on climate issues is not common sense.
  • Reduce traffic congestion and improve accessibility, especially for the business community.
  • Offer flexible and green alternatives to private car ownership, such as articulated buses instead of light rail phase 2.
  • Support stable transport to business areas and adapt solutions to local needs.

Summary

Liberal Alliance wants a mobility plan for Odense that focuses on flexible, technological solutions such as car-sharing, e-bikes, autonomous buses, and smart traffic management systems. The solutions must be flexible and tailored to the individual needs of citizens without coercion, while investments in public transport ensure maximum value for taxpayers' money.

Political proposals for the mobility sector

  1. Flexible articulated buses instead of light rail phase 2: Implementation of articulated buses and BRT in peripheral areas and along central routes as a flexible and economically sustainable solution to transport needs without creating congestion.
  2. Car-sharing schemes with more electric vehicles: Promote the use of car-sharing schemes focusing on electric vehicles in cooperation with private actors, ensuring more citizens gain access to green transport without owning a car.
  3. Strengthened e-bike and e-scooter infrastructure: Increase the use of e-bikes and e-scooters by establishing more charging stations and strengthening the cycling infrastructure, making it easier to combine cycling with public transport.
  4. Intelligent traffic management systems: Implement smart traffic management systems that optimize traffic flow and reduce congestion in Odense. The systems must ensure a more efficient use of the road network and public transport.
  5. Expert committee for the implementation of autonomous vehicles: Appoint an expert committee to investigate and develop an implementation plan for autonomous vehicles in Odense. Inspiration can be drawn from trials in Hamburg and Oslo.
